EINS: a tool that protects your venue

An EINS — étude d'impact des nuisances sonores — is a technical study of how amplified sound behaves in a place and of the measures that keep its impact under control. Handled well, it is one of the most useful things a wedding venue can commission: it turns sound from an unknown into something understood, designed and evidenced, so issues are resolved on paper long before they ever reach a neighbour, a mairie or a wedding day.

(a) The framework

A demanding, evolving regulatory landscape

French regulations now expect venues broadcasting amplified music at significant levels — indoors or outdoors — to be able to demonstrate control of their noise impact. This applies to public establishments and event spaces of many kinds: concert halls, music bars, nightclubs, festivals, and wedding venues among them.

The framework introduced by Décret n°2017-1244 and detailed by the Arrêté du 17 avril 2023 is technical and continues to evolve. Our role is to simplify it: to tell you what applies to your property, and to help you reconcile the sound quality of your events with the peace of your neighbours, environmental protection and the hearing of your guests.

Please note

Not every wedding venue automatically requires an EINS. Applicability depends on the characteristics and operation of each venue, including the nature, level and frequency of amplified sound and the way the place receives the public. A professional assessment should be carried out to determine the requirements applicable to your property.

(b) Our approach

Anticipate, exchange, calculate, measure

Every study is tailored to the context — before, during or after events. Each stage involves regular discussion with you and with the people who run your events: sound technicians, coordinators and production teams. Where useful, we also take part in conversations with neighbours and local stakeholders, because an EINS works best as a shared, understandable document rather than a technical surprise.

The study begins before problems do: layout, spaces, systems and operating hours are examined while they can still be shaped.

We listen first — to you, your team and, where appropriate, neighbours and authorities — so the study answers the questions actually being asked.

Predictive modelling establishes how sound travels from each space and system towards sensitive locations, in the configurations that matter.

Step 04

Measure

In-situ measurements with calibrated, class-1 instrumentation verify the reality on the ground and anchor the report in evidence.

(c) Inside a real EINS report

What the document actually looks like

A proper EINS is a working document, typically several dozen pages, combining site description, predictive calculations, in-situ measurements and an action plan. It is designed to be read by owners, technicians and public stakeholders alike. The figures below are simplified illustrations of the kind of graphics a report contains — they are examples, not data from any real venue.

Plans of the venue and its surroundings, sensitive receptors identified, spaces and systems described.

(d) Situations

When venue owners usually ask us to look at an EINS

01

Existing wedding venues

The venue already operates and amplified sound is used regularly. The question is what applies today and whether the current setup and operating practice can be evidenced.

New wedding venues

A venue preparing to open. Assessing early allows the study to inform the layout, the sound system and the operating model rather than constrain them afterwards.

Conversions

A château, barn, cellar, farm or private estate being converted into an event venue, where the building's existing performance is largely unknown.

Renovations

Works that change the envelope, openings, roof or internal separations — all of which change how sound leaves the building.

Changes to sound systems

New systems, added subwoofers, new outdoor zones or higher levels can materially change impact even when the building has not changed.

Changes to event operations

Later finishes, more outdoor events, larger capacities or additional simultaneous spaces.

Noise complaints

Where complaints have been received and the venue needs an objective technical understanding of what is happening and what can be done.

Local authority concerns

Where a mairie, préfecture or other authority has raised questions and the venue wants to respond with evidence rather than assertion.

Venue sales and acquisitions

Due diligence for buyers and sellers, where acoustic constraints can materially affect the value and future operation of the property.
